Eagle eyed blog readers may have noticed that from time to time I have mentioned something called ‘School for Landlords’ in my posts. What is that?
All will now be revealed.
What it is
School for Landlords is essentially a series of educational videos on landord and tenant law and practice. The videos will be grouped into ‘modules’ and will be published weekly.
All the videos will be available free for two weeks. After that they can be viewed by +Plus members of Landlord Law on the Landlord Law site.
About the School for Landlords videos
The first module will be on increasing rent. I chose this as its quite a nice contained subject to start off with, and will be very relevant to landlords (and also to tenants. if they want to watch too!). The first one will go online next week.
The videos will be published in three places:
- Here on the Landlord Law Blog
- On the School for Landlords site, and
- On the Landlord Law site (for +Plus members only)
Why am I doing this?
I was quite struck by the recent Private Landlords Survey which said that most landlords are small landlords with just one or two properties, and that a large proportion of them want more information on tenancy law.
Many of those landlords either do not have time to attend ‘proper’ courses, or do not know where to find them, or maybe cannot afford them. So this series is for them. If you watch all the School for Landlords videos, you will learn a lot about tenancy law and practice, at NO cost.
Although I hope that many landlords will then decide to join Landlord Law, to view again the older videos or to use the Landlord Law facilities.
Future videos will include modules on tenancy types, and tenancy agreements.
Further information
You can read more about School for Landlords on the About page of the School for Landlords website. There is also an updater you can sign up for, which will let you know when new videos are coming online.
I hope you willl support this new venture, and let me know what you think of the videos in due course. I would also welcome suggestions for content.
Plus I also hope to be recording discussions on the video topics with property professionals in due course. So if you would like to be involved in this please let me know.
Are you a landlord?

You are such a smart lady Tessa – great idea well done. I wish you every success and if this is what you invited me to be a part of you can count me in – but not until January because I am snowed under until then.
In my experience it is the small details that landlords often get wrong and I know that this will really help those landlords – how very exciting.
Hi Mary. Yes I did mention this obliquely to you before I had all the details worked out.
I am looking to have some panel discussions to round off the modules and I would be absolutely delighted to have you as one of the panellists. I will probably need to record the rent increases one by the end of the year but there will be others next year!
Ben Reeve Lewis has already agreed to be a regular on the panel (like Alan Davies to my QI but with less hair).
I have a few other people in mind too but if anyone reading this would like to volunteer please do!
I think it important that there be some input on the courses from ‘proper’ landlords and agents. I am after all only a solicitor – I don’t rent out properties myself (although I did rent out my flat once while I was abroad).

This is great idea! Landlords and tenants should know about the law and practice of house renting and leasing. Sometimes this is main cause of misunderstanding between the two parties.
