Easy Law for Landlords – creating content

This post is more than 13 years old

April 24, 2012 by Tessa Shepperson

Middle templeHaving received a mandate to develop my Easy Law for Landlords course, I now need to create the content.

Although basically it is something I enjoy doing, there is an element of fear there – will they all think its rubbish? Hopefully not.

Equity and trust

I spent much of the weekend re-acquainting myself with the law of trusts and equity as I think a basic article on that is called for.  The law of trusts underpins the rules on joint ownership of property.

It was not an easy subject to absorb quickly and then write about, but

always at my back I hear
times winged charriot hurrying near

(Andrew Marvell)

I need to press on with things if I am gong to be ready to start at the end of May.  I am quite pleased with the trust article actually, so have now moved on to agency law.   An important subject and one which, it  seems, is little known among many agents.  When I have finished that, hopefully today, that will more or less complete module 2.

House style

Another thing I need to sort out at this stage, is how I am going to present things and my ‘house style’, so I can make sure it is consistent. For example I am going to use different colours for different types of quotation (case law, statute etc), there are different colours for different levels of heading, and so on.

Gill, my web designer, has done me a great template with colours and styles I can use to highlight points. Hopefully it will make the articles a bit easier for students and read and understand.

Then there is the never ending hunt for suitable pictures to illustrate them. I am spending a small fortune at istockphoto. Wikimedia commons is also a great source.

Weekly content

I am also considering what other resources I need to provide on a weekly basis. I think probably a jargon buster is called for (it sounds less boring than ‘glossary’).

Each week is going to have its own index page with links to that weeks content. Maybe a task sheet setting out the things students will need to do during the week?

But enough of talking about it – I need to do it! Back to the salt mines . I’ll write more later.
