Landlord Law Blog roundup from 22 October

This post is more than 13 years old

October 27, 2012 by Tessa Shepperson

Jerry Hall StrictlyWork this week has again revolved around the new Easy Law course which is taking a bit longer than expected.

Mainly because I have decided to introduce each section with a little video, which of course all take time to prepare.  But I think it is worth it as it will ease people nicely into the course material each week.  I have got up to week 6 (of 14).

Outside of work, I am now a dedicated follower of Strictly – much to the disgust of my husband who hates dancing and thinks its all silly.  *Sigh*

But what happened on the blog?

Monday

Claiming rent from tenants who have gone abroad

This can be a big problem, as how can you claim unpaid rent from someone now living in Idaho, USA?  I discuss the options.  Read about them here …

Tuesday

Councils sue landlords under the proceeds of crime act

Two stonking fines in these two cases.  One is an HMO case and the other involves breaches of the planning law – and a fine of (wait for it) £1.438 million!  Find out more here …

Wednesday

Tenants served with a section 21 notice but not moving out

An old, old story to some of us, but a new and surprising one for the landlords (or rather their son) asking this blog clinic quesiton.  Read the predictable reply here …

Thursday

Can landlords pass the blame on to their letting agents when things go wrong?

The answer of course is “no”.  If this surprises you, read the article which explains why, here …

Friday

Ben Reeve Lewis Friday newsround #81

With the discussion still raging on #80  Ben tells us about narrow windows, home truths and new laws on homelessness.  Get it all here …

Further reading

  •  Lots of good Guardian articles this week, for example this one from David Lawrenson on the lack of government and council online guidance
  • Our own Ben Reeve Lewis (now a regular Guardian writer) on a seismic shift in housing policy and procedure, while
  • Landlord Aki Ellahi tells everyone why renting to housing benefit tenants makes sense
  • If you are concerned about these things, now is your chance to tell the governmnet via their inquiry into the PRS – deadline is 17 January 2013
