The Landlord Law Conference

This post is more than 12 years old

January 10, 2013 by Tessa Shepperson

conference-portraitAlthough I have mentioned the conference in the weekly roundups I have not done a proper post about it yet.  So here goes.

We are having a Landlord Law Conference!

Its something I have wanted to do for ages but vaguely thought that no-one would want to come (the way you do).

However a quick email to my newsletter subscribers earlier this year brought forth the response that, Yes!  they would like a conference please.

So we are putting one on.  Its called the Landlord Law Conference but is actually being run through our new Easy Law Training company.

Athenaeum in Bury St EdmundsVenue

We are based in Norwich, but Norwich is perceived as being remote from everywhere (even though its not) so obviously that was not an option.

We therefore decided to use a lovely venue we sourced earlier this year called the Athenaeum in Bury St Edmunds.  Bury is reasonably close to us and has good transport links (and a rail station).

The Athenaeum is  a beautiful building in the heart of the city right next to the Cathedral and Abbey Gardens.

We are in the ballroom which is on the ground floor.  Its a lovely room with plenty of space for, not only the delegates and speakers, but also the sponsors’ tables.

So unlike an event I attended earlier this year, delegates won’t be taken miles away from the sponsors when they go to the talks.

TDSSponsors

As regards this, I should have mentioned before that our main sponsors are TDS.  They have been really supportive, and we are very grateful to them.

We have a few other sponsors, chief of whom is ARLA who will (like TDS) have representatives available to talk to delegates on the day.

We do have a few other sponsors tables available so if you are interested let me know and I will get some details out to you.  You can see all the sponsors >> here.

The BallroomProgram

The program consists entirely of legal issues (no property investor get rich quick schemes here) and includes

  • Simon Parrott on Agency law,
  • David Smith on HMOs, our own
  • Ben Reeve Lewis on harassment,
  • John Murray on the Residential Property Tribunal and
  • Tom Derrett on tenancy deposits.  Plus
  • me on tenancy agreements and eviction.

We have told the speakers that we are going to want notes which will be provided to delegates at the conference.

You can see the full program >> here.

Note by the way that we only cover the law for England & Wales UK – so this event won’t be suitable for you if you own and rent property in Long Island USA or overlooking Sydney Harbour in Australia! Or indeed if it is in Scotland as Scotland has a different legal system.

CPD

ARLA have indicated that attendance at the event will qualify for ARLA CPD.

It will also qualify for CDP for the UK Landlord Accreditation Partnership for landlords who are members of that.

Cost

This is a paid for event and not a free one.  One of the reasons for the conference is to help pay for a new training website for our new Easy Law Training service.  So we need to make a profit.  And putting on a conference is not cheap.

There are two prices.  The standard price is £150 plus VAT ie £180.  This compares well with other legal training events and includes lunch.

However for our own customers (Landlord Law members and Easy Law students) we are offering a limited number of places at half price ie £75 plus VAT.  Which is  pretty affordable.  Some people have joined Landlord Law so as to qualify …

Accommodation

As delegates will be coming from far and wide, we have arranged a special conference rate at the adjacent four star Angel Hotel.

Which is pretty nice.  See the picture below.

Who should attend?

The conference is really aimed at landlords and letting agents.  However we have an interesting mix of attendees so far, including (in addition to lots of landlords and agents)  national charity workers, local authority housing officials and landlord association personnel.

A couple of people have contacted me, annoyed that the conference does not cater for tenants.  Unfortunatly we can’t put on, in one day, a conference that will be appropriate for both landlords and tenants – it would end up being something suitable for neither.

We are not anti tenant (surely this blog should show that), and I am actually developing a number of services specifically for tenants.  But the conference is essentially an event for landlords.

Find out more

One of my tasks as the Easy Law webmaster is the creation of a special Conference section on the Easy Law website.  You will find it >> here.  As well as by clicking the conference banner below.

If you are a landlord or a letting agent, or work in property is some other capacity, I hope you will consider the conference.  It should be a good event.
