The Immigration Bill is now the Immigration Act 2014

This post is more than 11 years old

May 20, 2014 by Tessa Shepperson

Locked outJust a quick ‘heads up’ on the Immigration Act 2014.

I was browsing through the DCLG website last night and found this announcement quite by chance when I was looking for something else.

The bill received the Royal Assent on 14 May.

Information about the final form of the bill is hard to find – I can’t see it on the Legislation UK website yet – no doubt it will go up soon.

This is what is says  in the ‘highlights’ summary on the DCLG site:

Requiring private landlords to check the immigration status of tenants, preventing those with no right to live in the UK from accessing private rented housing

Presumably there will be a commencement order somewhere.  If anyone knows anything can they leave a comment?

Nothing will happen generally for a while: intention was to pilot it first, and so full implementation not likely for at least a year. I hope to be writing something about it soon!

Below is an extract from the last Tenancy Relations Newsletter that was published last month based upon the House of Commons debate.

“The pilot scheme is still set for implementation in October although some Lords are attempting to secure a further debate, assessment and vote to approve the system before it is introduced nationally”.

My error, House of Lords debate not the Commons. I will see what I can find

From Migrant Rights Network on 14 May

“At this stage, it has been confirmed that there will be a pilot of landlord immigration checks in one geographical area apparently ‘big enough to allow for a proper evaluation before national roll-out’. Given that this will presumably be just before the next general election, it is possible that the national roll-out will not, in the end, happen.”

Similar to the opinion in Tenancy Relations Newsletter

    Thats interesting Colin. Thank you.

I wonder where the pilot area will be?
